The art of transforming the sea into precious materials

KAOMER is an exceptional porcelain, handcrafted in France from recycled oyster shells.
A material unique in the world, born from the sea, sublimated by the hand of man.

A material unique in the world

Three years of research were needed to create a porcelain capable of combining innovation, beauty and durability .

Derived from oyster shells, KAOMER material reflects light with unprecedented intensity. Its whiteness, resistance, and transparency surpass even those of traditional porcelain.

In each piece, we find the magic of mother-of-pearl , that subtle iridescence specific to seashells, which makes KAOMER a living material.

Inspiration

It is through our freedom to undertake that Alegina was inspired by the sea to create this porcelain which is called Kaomer®.
Nature is the primary creator of all things, and one of its most precious treasures is the oyster. This biodiversity has given rise to a material that reflects the purity, beauty, and refinement of the sea. Our inspiration: the pearly whiteness of the oyster, its magnificence and purity. We thus envisioned an authentic, bio-based porcelain, reflecting the very essence of nature's finest creations.

Research

"Porcelain" comes from the Italian "porcella," which refers to a small white seashell that, in some Eastern countries, was used as currency. It is characterized by a smooth, glossy, porcelain-like glazed surface. Porcelain* pieces are highly sought after by collectors for the beauty of their shells.

After 3 years of research and development, we have
They took up the challenge and were able to design a true porcelain made from the best combination of oyster shell and porcelain-making know-how.

Design

Each piece is conceived and designed by our team. Our primary inspiration is nature. We work with ideas
We strive to meet the desires and needs of our customers, while preserving and enhancing the unique character of our porcelain. The first step is the design of the models by our partner Dominique, a potter and ceramicist with 40 years of experience. These models are created in plaster, clay, or stoneware and must account for the shrinkage and final deformation of the pieces.

Mold

Our molds are made of plaster by our team and our porcelain partner, Jean-Louis PUIVIF. They will be used to produce our pieces in series. A first positive master mold is made, from which we can create negative production molds. A mold is designed to produce about sixty castings; beyond that, it must be replaced.

Preparation

The slip undergoes several stages of production. Its recipe was invented and refined over three years of research. At the end of the preparation, all the ingredients are ground together with water, then sieved until a slip of unparalleled fineness and exceptional properties is obtained.

Drying

Once the piece is removed from the mold, its moisture content is still high. The pieces are stored on wooden shelves so that the surface and the atmosphere can absorb the excess water. The piece then undergoes its first shrinkage.

Finishing

Each piece passes through our hands for finishing touches. They are carefully deburred, sanded, and polished. Made individually using traditional methods, each of our creations is unique.

Cooking

The first firing is done at a low temperature; this is the bisque firing stage. Afterward, the material is solid enough to be handled and remains porous for the application of the glaze.

French Excellence

KAOMER is handcrafted in Vendée, in our workshop.

Each creation embodies French know-how , sustainability and responsible beauty : a luxury that does not oppose nature, but is inspired by it.
